Engagement rate is the multiplier on every earnings estimate, so it deserves more attention than follower growth. Calculate it as total interactions divided by followers, times 100 — and weight comments more heavily than likes when comparing accounts.

Benchmarks for 2026: under 10k followers, 3–6% is healthy. 10k–50k, 2–4%. 50k–250k, 1.5–3%. Above 250k, anything over 1.5% is strong. If you are below the band for your size, that is where your money is leaking.

Fix one: cut posting frequency and raise quality until your average beats your last ten posts. Fix two: write first lines that make people stop, not captions that explain the image.

Fix three: ask one specific question per post to lift comments. Fix four: use saves-driven formats — carousels, checklists, comparisons — because saves are weighted heavily in distribution.

Fix five: reply to every comment within the first hour for the first month. It is unglamorous, it works, and it directly raises the number brands use to price you.
